Terms of Use
A safe place to learn statistics.
StatSprout is free, run by a nonprofit, and open to anyone. These terms are the agreement between you and us — what we provide, what we ask of you, and what we cannot promise.
Effective 30 August 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and StatSprout. They apply when you use statsprout.org, with or without an account. By creating an account, or by using the site, you accept them. If you do not accept them, please do not use the service.
Our Privacy Policy forms part of this agreement and explains what we collect and why.
What StatSprout is
StatSprout is a nonprofit that teaches statistics and data literacy, free of charge, to learners from roughly grade 3 through grade 12 and to adults who want the same material. Everything on the site is free. There is no paid tier, no trial that expires, and nothing held back behind a subscription. We do not plan to add one, and if that ever changed, work you had already done would remain free to you.
Who may use it
- 13 and over: you may create your own account.
- Under 13: you may not create your own account, and our server will refuse to make one. You can use guest mode straight away with no account at all, or a parent or guardian can create an account for you from theirs.
- Parents and guardians:if you create an account for a child under 13, you are agreeing to these terms on their behalf as well as your own, and you are confirming that you are that child’s parent or legal guardian.
- Teachers:you may use StatSprout with your class without asking us. Please follow your own school’s rules about student accounts and data first.
Your account
Give accurate information when you sign up — particularly your birth year and month, since they decide which protections apply to your account. Keep your password to yourself and do not let anyone else use your account. Tell us if you think someone else has got into it.
You are responsible for what happens under your account. Administrative, educator, and volunteer permissions are granted by us and cannot be obtained by choosing an option during sign-up.
What we ask of you
While using StatSprout, please do not:
- Try to access another learner’s account, records, or answers.
- Try to get around the security of the site, or probe it for weaknesses without asking us first.
- Scrape, bulk-download, or automate use of the site in a way that degrades it for others.
- Upload or submit anything unlawful, abusive, or harmful — including through the contact form.
- Use the service to break the law, or to help anyone else do so.
- Misrepresent your age in order to obtain an account you are not eligible for.
If you think you have found a security problem, please tell us rather than exploiting it. We will not pursue anyone who reports a genuine issue in good faith and gives us a reasonable chance to fix it.
Your work and our content
What you write stays yours. Your answers, your progress, and anything else you enter belong to you. We use them only to run the service for you, as set out in the Privacy Policy. We do not claim ownership of them and we do not publish them.
Our courses stay ours. The lessons, questions, explanations, illustrations, and the StatSprout name and mark belong to StatSprout. You may use them freely for your own learning and for teaching your own students. You may not republish them as your own, sell them, or present them as another organisation’s work.
What we do not provide
Being clear about this matters more than sounding impressive:
- No certificates or accreditation. StatSprout is not a school and not an accredited institution. Finishing a course here does not produce a qualification, credit, or transcript, and does not entitle you to one.
- No guarantee of accuracy. We work hard to get the statistics right and we correct mistakes when they are pointed out — those are among the most useful messages we get. But the material is provided for education, and it is not professional, academic, medical, legal, or financial advice. Do not rely on it for a real-world decision that matters without checking it.
- No guaranteed availability. This is a free service run by a small nonprofit. It may be unavailable, and we may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of it. We will give notice where we reasonably can.
- No support commitment. We read everything sent to us and reply as a person, but there is no response-time guarantee.
Ending it
You can delete your account at any time from Settings; it asks for your password first because deletion cannot be undone. A parent can delete a child’s account, or revoke consent, from their own account at any time.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms — in particular one used to reach another learner’s data. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will tell you why and give you a chance to respond first.
Legal bits
The service is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. To the extent permitted by law, StatSprout is not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of a free educational service. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot lawfully be limited, and nothing in them removes rights you have as a consumer under the law where you live.
If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest continues to apply.
Changes to these terms
If we change these terms we will update the effective date at the top, and we will notify account holders by email before a material change takes effect. Continuing to use StatSprout after that means you accept the updated terms.
